If one tries to study or computer network, you must learn and understand how IP addresses and the Access Control List (ACL). Networks, especially Cisco is not complete without this set. This is where comes in wildcard masks

What is wildcard masks?

Wildcards masks are 32 bits long and paired with an IP address. ACL is used to filter IP addresses.

Example: # 1

R1 (config) # Access list 10 permit 172.16.0.0 0.0.255.255.

The last four bytes – 0.0.255.255 is the wildcard IP address 172.16.0.0. By applying wildcard for the IP address, the router will ignore the value of the last two bytes. This declaration will allow the router to allow traffic direction Source IP 172.16. (Any value). (Any value).

Example: # 2

R1 (config) # access list 10 permit 172.16.16.0 0.0.15.255.

The Joker in this case is 0.0.15.255.

This declaration will allow the traffic range 172.16.16.0 – 172.16.31.255.

By now, everyone should know that: 172.16.0.0 is a class B network

Thus, the joker is 255.255.0.0

To calculate the mask, is subtracted netmask of transmission:

255 255 255 255 – Dissemination mask

-255.255.0.0 – Class default subnet mask B

= 0.0.255.255 – mascara.

0r example # 2 above:

172.16.16.0-network address.

255.255.240.0 – netmask.

Subtract the mask transmission network:

255 255 255 255

-255.255.240.0

= 0.0.15.255 – Wildcard mask.

Let Class C

192.168.1.0 (Class C)

255.255.255.0 (default skin)

as above, the default mask subtraction from the issue:

255 255 255 255

– 255.255.255.0

= 0.0.0.255 (wildcard)

Note:

Obtaining and implementing the correct wildcard mask depends on your network.

See this example:

255 255 255 192 (/ 27)

Subtract the network wildcard Transmission:

255 255 255 255

255 255 255 192

= 0.0.0.63 – mascara
